Emily Schrynemakers

University Placement Specialist

A native New Yorker, Emily has over 10 years of experience in the field of education and strongly believes in access to higher education for all. Her life changed when she traveled to Brazil for the first time in 2007 and fell in love with the culture, the music, and the language – and has been dedicating herself to studying Portuguese to this day. Her journey in education began in 2010 when she became a writing tutor for undergraduate students, and she dedicated herself to helping them develop their voices and ideas through writing and development of ideas, arguments and unique stories. She became passionate about access to education for students in Latin America after conducting research in São Paulo, Brazil, for her Master’s Degree in Political Science.

After returning from Brazil, Emily began to serve students at public universities in New York as an academic advisor, supporting them in their applications to majors such as engineering, biology, pre-med, social sciences and business. Utilizing a holistic approach to advising, Emily seeks to foster long lasting relationships with her students to better understand all the factors that contribute to their stories and provide tools to help them overcome any challenges on the route to achieving their dreams.

Currently, Emily lives in Brazil and is a part of the University Placement Team at LALA, where she has the immense privilege of advising students individually, in groups, and through interactive events to support them on their journeys to study in the USA. Being accepted to a university is certainly the end goal – but Emily also finds that fostering lifelong relationships with her students and creating a space where they can develop their thoughts and express their emotions is one of the most gratifying and rewarding aspects of advisement.
